As part of the overall infrastructure improvement works for the Fifa 2010 World Cup and beyond, a large scale upgrade project was carried out on the N1 running through Johannesburg, Gauteng. This involved the upgrade of a considerable length of freeway along with numerous interchanges, junctions, bridges and associated works. As part of this, a high profile signature structure was proposed to replace the existing pedestrian bridge across the N1 that allows access between Weltevreden Park and a number of community facilities accessible via 7th Avenue.

The resulting structure features a large curved pylon supporting a truss-form deck via 6no pairs of cable stays. Freyssinet initially carried out the post tensioning of the vertical cables running through the pylon itself. Once construction of the pylon and deck was complete, Freyssinet installed and stressed the cable stays using the 4 strand H1000 fork to fork cable stay system. Working to very stringent installation tolerances, the fabrication, installation and stressing of the stays was carried out to the satisfaction of the main contractor, engineer and client.
